Koh Yao

Koh Yao District, located in the southern part of Ao Phang Nga National Park, was established as a district in 1988 after being a sub-district for 85 years. It comprises two large islands, Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi, and is divided into four administrative areas: Koh Yao Yai Subdistrict Municipality and Phru Nai Subdistrict Municipality (located on Koh Yao Yai), Koh Yao Subdistrict Municipality, and Koh Yao Noi Subdistrict Administrative Organization (located on Koh Yao Noi). The total area of ​​Koh Yao District is 141.6975 square kilometers or 87,482.72 rai. The topography of Koh Yao Yai consists of mountains stretching from north to south, covered with dense forests, and sandy beaches along the western and eastern coasts. Beyond the beaches are sandbars and foothills. The coastal areas and between the mountains feature headlands and bays lush with mangrove forests. The district covers an area of ​​94.54 square kilometers or 59,025.75 rai and comprises 11 villages. Over 90 percent of the population are Muslim. Tourism on Koh Yao Yai is gradually and steadily growing. Alongside daily life, the island's inhabitants maintain their way of life amidst pristine and tranquil nature, even though Koh Yao Yai offers accommodation, amenities, and numerous attractive tourist activities. Points of interest on Koh Yao Yai include: a tour around the island by vehicle, observing the lifestyle of the fishing communities at Ban Laem Lan and Laem Hat, swimming or kayaking; a boat trip from Chong Lad Pier to the Dragon's Back rock formation at low tide; visiting the Koh Khai islands for snorkeling; exploring Ao Khlong Son, Ao Hin Kong, and Ao Lan; watching the sunset at Lo Jark Bridge; a longtail boat trip from Chong Lad Pier to see the seven-colored lobster, oyster, mussel, blue crab, and fish farms, learning about traditional fishing methods and how to catch enough for family consumption and to protect endangered species; a boat trip through the mangrove forest at Hat Son and exploring the mangrove tunnel; watching the sunrise from Hin Kong Pier, passing streams and waterfalls at Hin Kong; a 4-kilometer hike; strolling along the white sandy beach; or cycling along nature trails on the island; observing rice planting demonstrations; and watching demonstrations of making goat milk products and Khanom Ba Bin (a traditional Thai dessert).
